Best Intentions Volume 4

AotD: Completely! And that’s really fucked up. I don’t know why it’s different and even I’m on the younger side of why I should feel that it’s different. It just is. I can’t really explain it to you. Tattooing is not like the other things. It’s separate. It’s different. And it’s not to be lumped in with the other ways you can express yourself. I don’t want it to be that. Yes, I do other stuff artistically as well as tattooing. I paint a lot. I draw. I knit shit like I’m doing right now. I ineptly and ham-handedly make things out of textiles. I’m not really good at it, but I enjoy it, but ultimately I’m a tattooer and the other things are sidelines for me. It’s just peculiar to think- I just can’t imagine that people would tattoo and do other stuff and that tattooing would come in second. I just don’t understand how that works. ~excerpt from my interview with Alice of the Dead.

Best Intentions (2015)

coverbest1

British Tattooer Ash Davies has just released a mammoth new tattoo magazine called Best Intentions which can be found here.
Even if I weren’t a contributor I’d recommend that you buy a copy; this is DIY tattoo culture and supporting projects like this mean that cool stuff(tm) is going to be made by people who care about tattooing, not by people who just want to pump out a sellable product aimed at people who watch reality tv.

I’m already working on something for volume 2.

Worst Zine Ever

7ccca86eb19a11e3b14a12e478479d96_8
I think it was somewhere around 2000 or 2001 that I visited my friend Skip Sampson in Ybor City, Florida and had a little Mr. Burns head tattooed on my knee along with my brother and our friend Mike. The idea- a riff on the classic Sailor Jerry POISON girl, featured C. Montgomery with crossedbones and was originally going to have POINTLESS under it. My other two bro-tat wearers decided they didn’t want the lettering and just like that, the classic tattoo overtones drifted away.

1515670_1415131222062686_1767480264_nOur friend Ash Davies, who was previously featured on OV back in April of 2013, just put out a new 60(ish) page ‘Zine that would do that POINTLESS idea proud. Titled WORST ZINE EVER, it collects some of his best renditions of our favorite Springfield residents (along with art by Billy Hay, Brad T, Gavin Rose, Fil, Mark Ford, Marcus McGuire, Marcos Attlewood, Nick Baldwin and Swambo) with just enough whatthefuck to appeal to us here at Occult Vibrations.

You can check it out on his web store at http://ashmadethese.bigcartel.com/product/worst-zine-ever-pre-order, or check out his Instagram feed here.

Make sure to tell him OV sent you!

I’ve been really looking forward to Yellow Beak Press’s newest offering “Born Weird” since Scott started sneaking me samples of some of the truly bizarre contributions that some of the world’s finest tattooers submitted to the show. That style of ‘Weirdo’ tattooing has always appealed to me.

There are some folks who do it when called upon, and others who’s style is just a little more… janky. Tattooers who’s aesthetic, regardless of the design, is always kind of out there and bordering on oddball. And that’s a good thing.

One of the folks who always comes to mind when I think of that particular style of tattooing is Ash Davies. He mixes cartoons and popculture imagery with a very underground comix edge with just enough Ed Big-Daddy Roth to make it interesting. Just my kinda tattoo.

If you’re looking for a great tattooer to follow on Instagram- Ash can be found here.
