Good Luck- Sailor Eddie

sailoreddiecamdenI was flagged down earlier today while I was doing my grocery shopping by an older gent who had a few Sailor Eddie (Camden) tattoos that he was kind enough to show me. He told me they were done over 50 years ago and was still happy with how they had held up.

  1. Sailor Eddie, Camden. 50 Years ago. I have basically that SAME tattoo done in 1970 by “Tatus” Ridge, who was 73 Years old & sold me all his ww2 Tattoo Stuff. He worked Fort Smilth, ar. (camp Chaffee) during ww2 and GOt RIch…he was also a Barber. and Impotrted Stuff, and weighed 300 Pounds.

Gee, My introduction to Real Tattooing told me “You will do better to buy a better car with your $100.00, son. Your Wife and Child are too much to Support on a Tattoo Income.”

Old Doc King told me same thing 3 Years later. My Eyes went to Hell in 1984. about the time TATTOOING took off.

I was still charging a ONE $ DOLLAR MINUMUM …yep, ONE DOLLAR.

I watched Old Doc King do a Tattoo on a fellow for TWO-BITS at his shop.

I asked him about it, said We Has A 3 Dollar Minimun at Greg Mays’s Shop in Lake Geneva? He said YOUR GOING TO RUN CUSTOMERS away . Just do the TATTOO cheap if your work is good, THEY COME BACK AND SPEND MORE!

He was doing a simple 3 Colour Cover Up of a Name. Flowers and Leaves. 25 cents. 1972…well, MILT ZEIS was still alive….I cannot remember what year.

    1. John, Buddy Mac McFall past about 5 years ago. He had been retired and did a little tattooing on the side. I was honored to be one of the last people to get a tattoo from him. I am one of his sons and have fond memories of the shop in Chicago.
