Dragon Panel

I found this photo when I was going through a stack of old prints from the collection of Sid Diller; Sid usually kept pretty detailed notes about the subjects in his images but this one was blank, so I’m not sure on the year, shop or artist behind the piece.

It has a really gnarly 1970s vibe to it, though, and the dragon is kicking ass.

  1. That was 900 West Belmont, the Front Space, where Buddy “Mac” Mc Fall worked, I was a Part Time by Invite Tattoo Artist there, I can recognise the Spot..I hope I am right. I was a Regular Visitor from 1970 – 1974, while I worked in Lake Geneva, and New Berlin Tattoo Shops.

I Remember Clifford (A Bachelor in Fine Art,some Indiana College) had Shoulder Pieces like that on his “Business Cards” at that time. I have only one Tattoo by Cliff, a Sagatarrius Horse on my Right Arm. I was going to get Cliff to do a Whole Back Piece in 1972, a Leather Clad Girl with a Whip. My Wife told me, “If you get THAT, I will leave you.” I Wimped out! Cliff told me later He told her to say that! It was a Time Consuming Piece, & I was there on my 1969 BMW R-60-S Motorcycle, with my Wife, & we had to Go Home to Racine, Wi. that night!

I was only 5’2″ tall, and weighed 112 Pounds! at 66 Years of age, I am 140 Pounds and 5’2″ tall.

I have no BMW motorcycle, but I still got Cliff, Mac’s, Chicago Ed & Greg & Shelia May’s work…plus lots I done myself.

  2. Hey John-
I’m in my 40s, so I don’t now if that makes me Gen X or what, but coming out of the skateboarding scene in the 80s there are certain words I can’t shake from my vocabulary; rad being one of them. I bust out the occasionally gnarly without thinking about it and my wife still makes fun of me for it!

    Thanks for the photos!

  3. Hey I think this guy is the guy who Stayed at the Chicago Tattooing after it moved…He told me he Remembered Buddy Mc Fall & Sent me some Photos.

I have his pictures in the 1970’s but I am really disorganised….If You Send Him a Email, he might Know. I have a picture of Same Guy being Tattooed by Milt Zeis, just before he died…several people has ask me. I think I know where Milt and those pictures are at.

I just will have to find them.
